My Most Embarrassing Moment

*reposted from 2011*
I held the lyrics to The Little Mermaids song,
“A Part of Your World,”
clinched within my clammy hand……
the paper becoming a little more soggy
with each passing second.
A small Philippino man was called to the stage.
He takes the microphone,
and belts out a Josh Groban tune:
 “YOU RAISE ME UPPPP
SO I CAN STAND ON MOUNTAINS!
YOU RAISE ME UPPPP,
TO WALK ON STORMY SEAS!
I AM STRONG, WHEN I AM ON YOUR SHOULDERS..
YOU RAISE ME UP: TO MORE THAN I CAN BE.”
A small man, but a huge voice.
He hit every note.
I was memorized until the silence was cut with:
“Lea its your turn!”
Of course.
I have to be the following act to the only great singer in the class.
I have to follow a Josh Groban song with my Little Mermaid song.
I kept the soggy paper locked in my hand
and slowly wobbled to the front of the class.
This was my acting class.
This was NOT a music class.
If i wanted to sing in front of an audience,
with a microphone,
 withOUT any background music,
i would have taken a music class.
but nonetheless,
the assignment was to pick a song,
and sing it in front of the whole class,
without background music,
and with a microphone!!!
Did I mention with a microphone!?!??!
I gave it my all.
I peeked at the soggy lyrics a few times,
but other than that,
I knew I had to be better than someone else in the class.
I couldn’t possibly be the worst.
Thats what kept me going.
The possibility that someone would be worse than me.
hahahah
The point of the assignment
was to break down our walls
and strip us down,
so that nothing beyond this assignment would make us embarrassed.
I am happy to report,
that that was the most embarrassing day of my life,
and the last.
(its nearing the one year anniversary of this most embarrassing day,
so it was finally time to share.)
So that is the most embarrassing moment of my life.
Nothing else cuts close to bringing my shower voice
or alone-in-my-car voice to my acting class.
It’s called a shower voice
and alone-in-my-car voice
for a reason.
